HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Here's a free download to help celebrate the holiday, an old demo version of a track called "Monster" off of the upcoming Sound Rippers digi-LP that's still in the works.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

TWO HUGE RELEASES THAT ARE OFFICIALLY OUT NOW:

On the eve of his upcoming tour of Asia, Juiceboxxx drops the brand new ten track mixtape, Journeyman From The Heartland. Just go to JUICEBOXXX.COM and download it 4 free. Features production by L-VIS 1990, Andy Petr, Schwarz and a bunch of others. Really fucking solid from front to back. More like an album than a mixtape, really. He's got tour dates on his blog!

And WTF, USAISAMONSTER has a new LP? Didn't know that this was actually coming out, but I'm so psyched that it has. The vinyl's out on November 9 (on a new label based in Brooklyn called Northern Spy), but in the meantime you can buy the digital HERE. Like NOW. Go get it!

I had touch of insomnia last night, so let me introduce this video of flying saucers of light coupled with a version of the track "Lights" by Big Fun 4ever that's smushed up with Green Velvet's "No UFOs" classic. Yes, if it is not already coined, I am coining the term "Smush Up" as a mash-up for the Jersey Shore crowd. The term's not entirely applicable to this song, but still...

Listen to the original "Lights" on Big Fun 4ever's myspace page.

Buy Green Velvet's Walk In Love on vinyl somewhere.

So, been posting about Bounce, Sissy Bounce, and Big Freedia for a while. Love it, love it, love it. Well, Big Freedia's finally coming to tear Milwaukee a new one, and the show doubles as Juiceboxxx's last MKE show for a while as well as the kickoff for his tour of Japan and Asia. If you miss this shit, I don't even know what to say to you.

Go to the facebook event page!

Also, I know this sounds like a contradiction but Carson Daily recently did a really great feature on Bounce and Freedia in particular. Watch it:

DOUBLE EDIT: JUST DROPPED ON BEATPORT! CLICK HERE 2 BUY IT!!!

In case u missed it, here's the little teaser vid I made of last weeks podcast:

So Mixpak Records launched a podcast series a while back. Cool, right? Well the latest edition is an hour long history lesson from one of my all time favorite Chicago house/juke/all around futuristic-awesome-badass DJs/producers, the backwards named DJ Nehpets. Click here 2 go 2 Mixpak's site and get all the download/subscription/etc details. Good looking, Mixpak!

Oh, and also I totally spaced on this ridonkulous release Mixpak just did by Cory Blaine called "Hot Plate" that's got both a Nehpets remix and a re-version of b-side "Car Jack" by Milwaukee's own ex-Geocash production powerhouse Andy Petr. Buy it on vinyl or ones and zeroes, it's like soooo worth it. The Nehpets mix is TOTALLY CRUCIAL for all of the upcoming Boardwalk-Empire-time-travels-to-the-future parties you'll likely be throwing and/or attending this Halloween.

Here, check out the OG MIX 4 yrself:

And you should prob hit up his soundcloud page, there's this track he posted 6 days ago called "Brunette" that's got a super chill deep house vibe.

OCTOBER 5 ON iTUNES / TTL SOON / STAY TUNED FOR MORE

HEAR THE TRACK AND CLIPS OF THE REMIXES @ DJ TEENAGE WOLF'S MYSPACE PAGE!
A couple more things of interest...

Sissy Nobby "Nobby's Party" the OFFICIAL mixtape dropped last week. It goes without saying that it's flawless and euphoric. Check it out, although it seems that currently the only way to do so is with a facebook account and by clicking HERE. via NOLABounce.com

On the other side of the pond, Egyptrixx stopped by Kiss in London to chat with Sinden and spin some trax, including shit off an upcoming LP he's doing that sounds BEYOND nice. Hit up this Mad Decent article to hear the whole session and see the tracklist.

The Conformists are fucking legends. At least to me. I've been playing shows with them, either booking them in basements in Shorewood and Riverwest or traveling to their hometown of St. Louis, for about a decade now. It's hard to explain just how fucking weird they were the first five years or so of seeing them live. They'd use subtle intimidation techniques that were 1000 times more disturbing than the usual run-of-the-mill hardcore posing, pinwheel kicks or other generic forms of outward violence. Instead they'd slowly rock back and forth on their heals towards you until you were trapped in a corner, or stare you down until you got so unnerved you walked out. The first couple of times they played Milwaukee the room would slowly empty and afterward I'd hear people saying shit like "I really liked their songs, but I just couldn't take it anymore. Too intense!" Which seems like a strange criticism for a rock band. Eventually people started to get the hang of it though, and for a brief period of time their increasingly frequent trips to Milwaukee were met with sweaty kids trying their hardest to bang heads and pump fists along to time signatures they couldn't comprehend.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the kind of thing the Conformists do so well; bands that incorporate influences like the Fall, Rapeman and all that post-punk stuff that uses Captain Beefheart's musical sophistication, freaky attitude and seeming randomness as a springboard into another realm of their own. But these guys have been doing for longer than any of these young upstarts, and at their peak they did it better and way weirder than the anybody. I mean, their fucking logo is a pair of dead cats hanging from a tree.

The Conformists have a new record out called None Hundred (part of a trilogy with their other long players, Two Hundred and Three Hundred, respectively). They recorded it with Steve Albini. It's more of a slow burn, less maniacal take on their signature sound. "Mature" is the word, I guess. You can stream the whole thing on their bandcamp page, but I suggest you buy the 12". It comes with a free CD copy, too.

LISTEN TO AND BUY THE NEW CONFORMISTS LP, NONE HUNDRED!
SUMMER TAPES

Skeleton Warriors "LUVSIC" cassette (SAFG)
Okay so Skeleton Warriors are like Front 242 and all that Belgian shit plus some of the bubbling homemade synth charm of proto-NRG Patrick Cowley recordings, with a post-Rap appreciation for Roland drum machines. Dramatic and over-the-top vocal performances draw lyrical inspiration from topics like dating the elderly and theme songs about children of the porno generation. After all, they ARE from Florida, a weird nexus where scenes as diverse as Death Metal, Industrial, Pop Punk and Miami Bass have all thrived. The drive to write anthems that all of those art forms share is apparent when all of these weird elements start mixing. I definitely give these dudes props for trying to carve out their own little world of sound in between the cracks of so many oddly complimentary influences. Would love to hear these dudes do something super pop and "sell-out" like a remix 12" or a Scott Storch collabo.

Jimmy Sanchez and his Crystal Balls cassette (SAFG)
Jimmy from Skeleton Warriors gave me his solo tape last time they were in town. It's toned down a notch from Skeleton Warriors super tornado of sequencing, sparser and stripped of much of the sonic chaos. It lets the weirdness creep out a little slower. I like this tape, it's chill and gurgley.

Viking Fuck "Virgins" cassette (self-released)
Met these guys back in April when Possible Fathers and Catacombz visited their home turf of Iowa City. Three piece includes lead singer in cut-off jean shorts, no shirt, drummer with only a tom and cymbal who stands up when he plays, and an organist. We played in their basement where they were practicing earlier in the day when we arrived. Pretty appealing, sweaty, out-of-control... I wanna say synth punk but technically it's organ punk? Anyways, I'm a sucker for a properly executed "96 Tears" cover. Generally somewhere between New York No Wave and San Diego-style Spazz Punk legends like Le Shok and XBXRX, rounded out with a new millennium sense of psychedelia. Put that in your fucking one sheet, assholes. Anyways, grabbed this tape when Big Fun 4ever and Catacombz went to East Moline and played with them at Nitetrotter Fest. Where they proceeded to play another blazing, brief set. Even though I've long been sick of both Viking and Pirate imagery, it's worth overlooking for Viking Fuck.

Was gonna post the Catacombz and BZYBODIES tapes too but I haven't gotten them yet. Same with the iiEYES tour tape.

Dj teenage wolf - nino rave by Dj Teenage Wolf

Brand new DJ Teenage Wolf jam. Hot off the hard drive.

Did I mention his upcoming single Cuerno de Sonido on Vicious Pop Digital? With remixes by Udachi and Rampage? SOON.
Some random pics.

Sick Wizard from East Moline, IL. If you can't make it out, he's holding an eagle's claw which is holding a power orb.

"Hide behind a wall of smoke to deflect your dirty looks..."

Pretty much everything you ever wanted from Japanther wrapped up in a pretty bow (or a screen-printed cardboard sleeve with a comic strip featuring the Wicked Witch of the West, same diff). I have no idea what the chronology is, if this is before or after RNR Ice Cream? I'd guess it's not from the same sessions, judging by the sound of it. "Divorce" is one of their most ripping trax to date, briskly paced with metal-tinged fuzz bass riffs that explode into the big obligatory chorus. "Where are we gonna sleep tonight, Dad?" Thematically "Divorce" is perfect for the band, fitting nicely between "Cable Babies" and "Fuk Tha Prince A Pull Iz Dum" in Japanther's growing cannon of grade school rebel music. Flip side "Evil Earth" has as many "who-o-oa" sing-a-long parts as you'd expect from a song that could have been titled by Glenn Danzig (that's a compliment, in case you can't tell from my internet tone), with a few "yeah, motherfuckers!" thrown in for good measure. The conclusion of the 7" is a brief accapella jam that goes:

"Men's room/If your name's Larry, Harry, it don't matter/You can get what you want and get back on the road/Truck Stop Love/Ain't nothing wrong with some Truck Stop Love/Just singing a song about some Truck Stop Love."

I hope this shows up as a full song in the future. More punk bands should write about truck stops.

Should have posted this yesterday. Nitetrotter Fest started last night and marks the end of Mixtapes (or just shows at Mixtapes? I'm not quite clear on the deats but either way, SAD) in East Moline, IL. Today Big Fun 4ever and Terrior Bute play along with like 5 billion other bands. Tomorrow is Cave and Catacombz and like 10 bazillion more.

Saturday, July 03, 2010

Two singles you need:

One slow jam, one weird jam, one party jam. Opening slow jam "Lap Dog" is the jam of jams, a grinder with R&B snares popping all over the place as pianos vamp and Dog Dick future croons/falsetto raps over the top. I want a t-shirt that says "I'm a fiend for Dog Dick!"

*White Vinyl 7"*

Check out this vid of Dog Dick @ Whartscape last year, includes "Grease That I Got" at about the 8 min mark:

"Tonight I am riding the Vomit Wave!"

"New Swamp" is a the new track, a real oozer of a beast of a monster. "Vomit Wave" finally gets release on the b-side, as well as a re-do of "Shadowsss", a song originally released on the I live Like This Cuz I Like It full length.

*Green Vinyl 7"*

Both on Holy Holy Holy Records.

Also, go check out the new Sewn Leather track "Cream of the Crap" plus a bunch of other newish trax too @ myspace.com/sewnleather.

Hey so there's this massive torrent of 8 Stagediver live sets from the past 3 years called "No Magic Here" that dude's giving away for free download. Click HERE and SEED THAT SHIT.

Radio Graffiti's got some great stuff coming out soon too, including the last ever Dispyz record (green vinyl) and an amazing 7" by U.K. amigacore producer Hexadeci which features my newest favorite jam, "Swiss Yodelcore", on the b-side. You can catch a sneak peak of the track in this mix, at about 29 minutes in:

Keep your eyeballs peeled for this one it's a scorcher.

Simple, clean, streamlined, efficient. Nice.

Another tasty one:

WHAT? If you wanted a good looking flyer you should have made it yourself.

BIG FUN 4EVER comes out of its food coma long enough to squeeze out their first live show since winter.

SEWN LEATHER returns with tourmate DJ DOG DICK. MAYHEM WILL ENSUE. ENUFF SAID.

+ ANDY PETR's live debut. His growing arsenal of awesome trax were recently spotlighted on some blog called Fan Belt. Here's one of my favs, "New Pearl Necklace":

... but dude has made like a dozen trax since this so go peep some of the newer jamz.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 30 2010 9PM CACTUS CLUB MILWAUKEE, WI, USA

We're hitting that sweet spot of the summer where sick touring bands stop through on the weekdays (aka in between "important" towns) with increasing frequency, and in the case of this week Wednesday, it's starting to get absurd. On June 23, JEFF The Brotherhood, Cave, Quintron and Miss Pussycat and Genesis Climber all descend upon Milwaukee to wreak what will surely be TOTAL MUSICAL HAVOC. Plan rides accordingly, as you'll have to jet from the Borg Ward to Cactus Club as well as make some tricky life choices: stay for Quest for Fire's sure to blazing LP release set or go catch the reinvigorated Catacombz which now features Sam from Big Fun 4ever? That's what they call a "good problem".

Borg Ward 823 W. National Ave. 7PM Quest for Fire (LP release), Genesis Climber (CA), Jeff the Brotherhood (TN), Dear Astronaut ALL AGES

Cactus Club 2496 S. Wentworth Ave. 9PM Quintron and Miss Pussycat, Cave, Catacombz 21+ $10

STAY TUNED later in the day I'm posting the flyer for next week's Sewn Leather/DJ Dog Dick jumpoff...

EDIT: IT HAPPENED, CHECK THIS ISH OUT!!! :

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Okay. So, here is the chain of events:

1. I am informed that there is a giant cave in southern Illinois that holds a giant hippy jam fest on 4/20.

2. I search "cave fest" and click on the Shawnee Cave myspace page which features this text: "Two day outdoor music fest in the cave! This is the most unique venue you will ever attend. The cave is a natural amphitheatre with 50 acres of bluffs and beauty. Primitive camping included in ticket price! You pick your campsite. BYOB No Glass Bottles and No Pets. Come join us for an amazing experience. Bring your camping supplies and a smile on your face!"

3. My immediate thoughts are "We need to use this... for, like, a big show... or a festival or something... or like a big... rave... in a cave... like a..........
CAVE RAVE!"

4. I search "cave rave" and click on the first link without looking, noticing as the next page gets ready to load that I'm heading over to urbandictionary.com

5. And I quote:

1. cave rave

1) A party where the majority of attendees are female

2) The opposite of a "Sausage Fest"

"Who's gonna be at the party tonight?"
"Tammy, Sarah, Laura, Monifa, Shaniqua..."
"Sounds like a real Cave Rave."

by JohnoD Sep 4, 2006

2. cave rave

blasting music out of your bedroom, usually alone..
"whatcha doing tonight?"
"im in a bad mood, just gonna have a cave rave"

by madbrendan Dec 26, 2009

3. cave rave

a gathering of selected party members, whom refuse to go to bed when the clubs pour them out at silly o'clock.

Key items needed are..
1. Some Decks/tunes/Dj's
2. Some mad raving loons to dance in the dingy depths of the cave
3. Candy
4. Horses
"Yeah, so i got home at about 3 the next afternoon, fair messy, fair sleep deprived."

"Who was there?"

"Well ya know, just the usual horses, just horsing around"

"Aaaah ya gotta love the cave rave"

by tarajane Apr 30, 2007

6. The ad tags I edited out after coping and pasting the above section:

"buy cave rave mugs tshirts and magnets party female women sausage fest girls penis party cave rave party bedroom alone decks horses candy party raving"

7. CAVE RAVE 2K11 DETAILS COMING SOON?!?

The mighty, mighty EXTREME ANIMALS are here to tear up the MKE for a couple of days. Tonight they play Cactus Club with Juiceboxxx (freshly back from his marathon two month THUNDERZONE tour of the U.S.A.), Squidbotz and Stacian.

Then On Tuesday (info ripped from the UWM Theatre site):

Jacob Ciocci + David Wightman present
“2 Blessed 2 B Stressed”
(approx. 60 mins)

"Jacob Ciocci, a founding member of the renowned art collective Paper Rad, and collaborator David Wightman will be presenting an evening of raucous videos and musical mayhem. In addition to presenting recent videos and animations, including Booty Melt and The Peace Tape, Ciocci will perform his latest I Let My Nightmares Go, which uses video projection and live dance moves to “grapple with mental demons, web 2.0, G.O.D., 21st-century breakdown, real lies and fake truths, cartoon violence, and awareness bracelets”. Wightman will appear as “Fortress of Amplitude”- a guitar-wielding minstrel from another time and place. Accompanied by a drum machine, he will execute a musical composition focused on fantasy, repetition, and ecstasy."

Sounds pretty sick, right?

TOASTED LIKE A PANINI

Two new E-40 records (Revenue Retrievin: Day Shift and Night Shift) drop Tuesday. Rick Rock beats all over the place, obligatory drop-ins by Snoop, Too Short and the usual Yay Area crew members, plus an excellent track produced by Jerk mastermind JHawk called "Wet".

Yup, another set of sure to be under-appreciated gems from the King of the West Coast.

As a bonus treat, check out this new Sound Rippers track, "Tombstone". Free MP3 download, E-40-inspired groove.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Stress Ape played Milwaukee last night. Always a treat. Picked up their new single, "Time Hard". Heavy psychedelic noise sludge rock music. Highly recommended.

Pick up the 7" from their label, Hard Scrabble Amateurs.

Gnarly thumb.
